The City of Nanaimo Implements WaterTrax’s Water Information Management Solution: Consolidating Data to Make Informed Decisions Quickly and Confidently
Initially there was some staff hesitation about bringing in a new technology to manage our water quality data, but with some great training from WaterTrax’s customer service everyone was on board and we haven’t looked back!
The City of Nanaimo provides water management services to a population of over 80,000 residents. They use a multi-barrier approach to protect their water quality by:
- Restricting access to their watershed to protect source water
- Disinfecting to eliminate microorganisms
- Conducting a rigid water testing program to confirm that their water is safe
Operations staff members perform daily water quality tests in the watershed and distribution systems, with over 2,000 samples taken on raw and treated water annually. The Vancouver Island Health Authority regulates the city’s water system to ensure that the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Standards are consistently being met.
The Challenge
Prior to subscribing to WaterTrax, the City of Nanaimo was receiving laboratory reports from their external labs and water quality data from their sampling sites, then manually consolidating the data into various Excel spreadsheets. They were having trouble keeping track of all the data and where it was coming from. In early 2007, after hearing so many great things about WaterTrax through word – of – mouth, the City of Nanaimo decided to take the first step and view a demo. After the demo, the City of Nanaimo instantly recognized the need for a better data management solution and decided an implementation of WaterTrax was imperative.
The Solution
In May 2007, the City of Nanaimo adopted the WaterTrax service to manage all their water quality data and integrate with their external labs. “Initially there was some staff hesitation about bringing in a new technology to manage our water quality data, but with some great training from WaterTrax’s customer service everyone was on board and we haven’t looked back,” said Scott Pam¬minger, Water Resources Technologist, City of Nanaimo. WaterTrax’s ability to seamlessly consolidate external lab data into one centralized location ensured the solution would fulfill their operational needs.
WaterTrax’s customer support went above and beyond to ensure the City of Nanaimo’s implementation went without a hitch, even going as far as to train the external labs how to use the system. “I love the way WaterTrax reaches out every couple months just to make sure everything is going okay with our system.” “Their customer support is proactive not reactive,’’ said Scott Pam¬minger, Water Resources Technologist, City of Nanaimo.
The Benefits
WaterTrax has made it much faster and easier for the City of Nanaimo to analyze their water quality data and run reports, like their Annual Water Quality report they submit to the Vancouver Island Health Authority. With WaterTrax’s highly responsive customer service the City of Nanaimo never has to worry that something will go wrong and can analyze and report on their water quality data with confidence.
