Alberta Capital Region Wastewater Commission Implements Data Management Solution to Ensure Compliance with Sewer-Use Bylaw Requirements
Initial introduction to WaterTrax and full implementation and training took less than 4 months, which is truly amazing!
The Alberta Capital Region Wastewater Commission (ACRWC) provides wastewater collection and treatment services to 13 municipalities and a population of over 200,000 residents surrounding the City of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. The ACRWC also collects and treats wastewater discharges from over 3,000 institutional, commercial and industrial (ICI) facilities, and trucked liquid waste haulers in their service area.
In 2009, the ACRWC established a Source Control Monitoring and Enforcement Program for the trucked liquid waste haulers and industries, commercial businesses, and institutions that discharge into their sewer system. The ACRWC is currently finalizing the design of a monitoring program with a goal of screening dischargers by risk category and collecting samples at all of the higher risk ICI facilities over a 5 year period. Also, periodic audit sampling will be conducted on trucked liquid waste loads being dumped at their sewer transfer stations.
The Challenge
Prior to subscribing to WaterTrax, the ACWRC Technical Services Division was receiving laboratory reports from their internal lab and an external contract lab, then manually consolidating the results into various Excel spreadsheets. In September 2009, Mike Darbyshire, ACWRC General Manager attended the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association National Conference and Workshop on Wastewater where he saw a presentation on the success of Saint John Water’s implementation of WaterTrax to manage their water and wastewater data. Mike recognized the need for a better data management solution for ACWRC
and wanted a solution in place before the end of the year.
The Solution
Mike Darbyshire knew that a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider such as WaterTrax was the only software option that would meet both their functional and rapid implementation needs. WaterTrax’s ability to seamlessly consolidate internal and external lab data into one centralized location ensured the solution would fulfill their operational needs. As a result, ACWRC immediately subscribed to WaterTrax. “We recognized the need for a better data management solution and have saved countless hours in data consolidation by having both the internal and external labs upload our test results directly into WaterTrax,” said Mike Darbyshire, General Manager, ACWRC
The Benefits
With WaterTrax, Alberta Capital Region Wastewater Commission was able to rapidly implement a data management solution to meet their operational needs. ACWRC did not have to sacrifice functionality for a “lighter” easier to deploy solution. The time from Mike’s initial introduction to WaterTrax and full implementation and training took less than 4 months which Wade Teveniuk, Technical Services Supervisor, stated “is truly amazing and could not have been accomplished without a SaaS solution like WaterTrax!”
